TAME your MANE ...

The long awaited hair care blog! I get so many questions on hair products, what I use personally and how I can go once a week with washing my hair. So, I am finally sitting down to give you the details and how to’s.

Let’s start with hair training.

Having greasy hair is a cyclical problem: You wash your hair often to keep it looking fresh and clean, but overwashing ends up producing more oil. How can hair get oilier from trying to keep it clean? Here’s the thing: Once you strip your hair of its natural oils, the scalp goes into oil production overload, undoing everything you’re trying to combat. Overwashing your hair can actually cause it to be dried out, brittle, reduce shine and have more breakage.

However, you can actually train your hair to be less greasy. It’s all about spacing out your washes. The first few weeks of your new hair-training regimen may be difficult—especially since the oiliness won’t halt right away—but I can promise you’ll agree it was all worth it once you start seeing results.

My hair training routine:

  • I wash once weekly, at most twice. When I wash, I wash thoroughly with a clarifying shampoo and a hydrating shampoo.

  • I have a wash day(s) Tuesday and Saturday OR just once a week usually Friday as of lately so it is extra fresh for the weekend when I generally do more things outside of the house and gym/work setting.

  • DRY SHAMPOO- I love Kenra Dry Shampoo Foam. This is my go to! Helps give me the refresh and volume without cakey residue or that gritty feeling.

  • I use my wet brush pro or a soft bristle brush on my hair. I start at the bottom and work my way up to the roots.

  • ACCESSORIZE. Use different hair styles, add in those scrunchies and work the pony tail and braids. Low key day, throw a hat on!

  • Conditioner. I use a deep conditioning mask on my wash days. From the middle of hair down to ends and leftover product I rub closer to the top. I like to avoid the roots so they don’t get weighed down or greasy.

  • Leave in conditioner, currenly using Quai. Also, can’t go without my JOICO luster luck leave in. Gives my hair the protection and shine.

  • GISOU hair oil is my go to for a little shine and hydration throughout the week, only placing on my ends. A little product goes a long way.

How to Train Your Hair - Training Oily or Greasy Hair

  • Wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo 1-2 times a week.

  • Massage conditioner on the ends of your hair only not the top. Use a hydrating oil on the ends between washing.

  • Apply dry shampoo to your hair on days where you don't shampoo it, if needed.

  • Brush your hair twice a day with a bristle brush to spread its natural oils.

  • Avoid touching your hair and playing with it. Work different styles and accessories so you’re not tempted to wash.

  • Patience. It takes time but it will adjust.

Tips:

  1. I sleep on a silk pillowcase. Helps keep my hair smooth and less friction which in turn means less breakage. Also, skincare benefits if you’re not a back sleeper.

  2. I braid low or do a low pony tail when I go to bed. Same thing when I workout. I try to avoid the top knots and buns as much as possible unless its for a style. The pulling and twisting causes breakage as well.

  3. I am kind to my hair. I take the time to brush it out properly and not just rip a brush through my hair.

  4. Use a wet brush or a comb when your hair is wet and start at the bottom and work your way up.

Q&A’s ( as more come in from my instagram @life_styledbyashli, I will update this section)

  1. How often do you get trims? I schedule trims for every 6-8 weeks. When I have my hair extensions in I tend to go over that, but I try to schedule trims in between the retapes.

  2. What shampoo/cond styling sprays etc do you use? See above list and links to my amazon store :)
