If you’re looking for hair extensions or have had questions about the kind I use then this blog is for you.

** Any words you see highlighted throughout will have a link attached to them.

Let me start by answering the most asked question: “Do they damage your hair?”

Coloring your hair, improper brushing, pony tails and even products you use can damage your hair. So, when I am asked this question I always say it depends on a few things.

  • One, who is installing them. Are they properly trained and experienced.

  • Two, how well you take care of your hair. Are you using salon quality products and following the maintence care of your extensions after they’re installed.

  • Three, some methods are “better” than others. Yes, it’s true some extension methods claim to be damage free but it all depends again on the above. The only hair extensions that are completely non damaging are the halo couture pieces. They slip on and off daily and have no adhesion to your hair.

I have been getting my hair extensions with Hair Extensions by Jess since 2015. I had my first experience with hair extensions at that time. I tried the fusion method first and I didn’t love them for me.. My reason for that was simply because I would play with the bonds too much and cause them to slip/pull on my own hair. Not part of the after care, lol. The benefit to the fusion method is that you’re not back at the salon re-taping them every 6-8 weeks. The fusion last for 3 months and you’re able to do a ton more with hair styles as the bonds are small.

My next round of hair extensions I went with the tape-in method and I love them. I chose the brand Hair Talk and I couldn’t be more obsessed with them. I get the 18-21” tape-in Original Plus extensions. I am able to wear my hair in many different styles because of how well Jess places the tapes in my head. Now, no two heads are the same. My hair isn’t the thickest but it is full. I have a lot of hair and the length has grown over the years and now I am able to get one pack of hair. One pack is 20 pieces which equals out to 10 tapes total. Tapes are sandwiched together which is why 20 pieces become 10 tapes. The average person requires two packs of hair which is 40 pieces and 20 tapes total. Since no two heads of hair are the same, I always suggest going in for a consultation. If you’re local Jess offers free consults. You can go over hair methods and what will work best for your hair. Your length, texture and fulless all play a role in what will work for you.

Hair Extensions Q&A :

  1. Are they heavy? Not the amount I get done. They do add some weight as your adding grams of hair to your head but nothing crazy.

  2. How often do you wash your hair? Are they difficult to maintain? I currently wash my hair once a week. I use dry shampoo at most 1-2 times in between if I really need it. However, I have been training my hair for quite some time so I don’t get greasy as often as others may. Since becomming pregnant I haven’t sweat as I once was in the gym but once I am back to my regular program I will go back to 2 times a week max washing. My washing days were Tuesday and Saturday. Now I was every Friday. They aren’t difficult at all to maintain. Maintence is easy once you get the hang of it and get used to your new hair. Like all things new there is an adjusment period but it isn’t long at all. I use specific hair care items and will list below and link for you all.

  3. Do you get tape-ins? how do you like them? Volume or length? Yes. See above :) I love them. I get them for both fullness and added length.

My typical hair care routine:

  • Wash once weekly. Dry shampoo as needed.

  • Sulfate free and salon quality only products.

  • Wet brush, wet brush, wet brush! I do not use anything else to brush out my hair.

  • Afer washing I blow dry the roots so the tapes are not sopping wet. Then I give my hair some time to air dry. I use Oliva Garden brush to style/blow dry. As well as leave in products.

  • I sleep on a silk pillowcase and I either braid low or tie back loosley to sleep. Never a high pony or bun for sleeping. (This is with or without extensions)

  • I deep condition my hair from the middle down when I wash it to help keep the extensions hydrated.

  • Products I use are linked on my amazon storefront and listed below with images.
